Final Fantasy IX anime returns as Black Mages Legacy
The Final Fantasy IX animated project has resurfaced as Black Mages Legacy, and the official description gives a much clearer idea of what the show is about.
Season 1 is listed as in development as a 2D series with 10 episodes running 22 minutes each.
Vivi’s children lead the story
The new synopsis centers on Imel, Koln, Luciola, Théa, Fala and Doc, described as the children of the hero Bibi, the French name for Vivi.
They are said to be the last dark mages of the four continents. The group lives in Alexandria, where the city’s residents keep a friendly eye on them, even if that curiosity sometimes goes a little too far.
That setup makes it clear this is not a straight retelling of the original game. It is a follow-up story built around Vivi’s legacy and the next generation of black mages.
A peaceful life does not last
The official description also adds the first big story hook.
Koln discovers Mel, frozen like a statue, at the inn where he works. That incident appears to kick off the season’s main mystery, with the synopsis asking whether the tragic legacy of their father is finally catching up with them.
That points to a darker angle than the bright fantasy setting might suggest. Even with a younger cast, the story seems set to dig into the fate of the black mages and the emotional fallout tied to Vivi’s past.
